A boiler replacement is a brilliant way you could save money on your energy bills as well as cut your carbon emissions.
Official government figures reveal that of the 25 million homes in the UK, 83% are heated by mains gas equating to 21 million homes. Following the introduction of condensing gas boilers in the early 1980’s there have been dramatic advances in the efficiency of boilers and heating systems. Since 2005 all new gas central heating boilers fitting in England and Wales must be high efficiency condensing boilers unless there are exceptional circumstances and since October 2010 only boilers that are 88% or more efficient can be installed in homes.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, boilers account for around 55% of the cost of household energy bills. A boiler replacement and improving heating controls will significantly cut carbon emissions and could save householders as much as £490 a year on energy bills*.
The key reason why modern condensing boilers are more efficient is that they are able to condense and recover more heat via a larger heat exchanger. The larger surface area allows gases to cool to a level that the water vapour in the gas condenses, recovering more energy and increasing efficiency. Modern, well maintained boilers burn their fuel efficiently but they lose some heat in the exhaust gases that are released via the flue.
